Limited-time dealEnds 12/09 · D-42Short answer: if you use several devices and like NordPass's dark web monitoring and emergency access, pick NordPass. If you want a free plan with no device limit, email aliases and open source, pick Proton Pass. Both are on sale right now, so use the tables below to set your criteria before you pay.
Search for a password manager and the same two names keep coming up. NordPass and Proton Pass. Both have a reputation, both talk up their encryption, and both are on sale right now.
That's what makes it confusing. On a feature list they look alike, but day to day they feel quite different. It's hard to say one is simply better.
This guide compares NordPass and Proton Pass for 2026 in plain terms. Where a detail isn't confirmed in what we've published, we don't invent a value. We say "check the official site" instead.

The short verdict on NordPass vs Proton Pass
If you're short on time, here's the conclusion first. The reasons follow in the sections below.
- NordPass suits: first-time password manager users, people who want dark web monitoring and emergency access, and people who already use NordVPN.
- Proton Pass suits: people who want to start free with no device limit, people who want email aliases to cut spam, people who care about open code and public audits, and people who already use a Proton account.

The sources for these values are listed at the end.
Who makes each service?
A password manager is really about who holds your vault. So let's start with the company.
NordPass comes from Nord Security
NordPass is a password manager developed by Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN. The same company also makes NordLocker and Saily. A Korean-language landing page has been available since December 2024, which makes sign-up easier for users there.
If you already use NordVPN, it's handy that everything runs under the same Nord account setup. Our NordPass password manager guide goes into more detail.
Proton Pass is part of the Proton family
Proton Pass is a password manager from the Swiss security company Proton. You use it with a Proton account, so if you already have Proton Mail or Proton VPN you can start straight away. Proton is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and falls under Swiss data protection law.
Proton Pass has its security checked by outside organisations and publishes the results. We covered the audit separately in our Proton Pass security audit analysis.
Encryption and security structure
Start with the most important item. When you pick a password manager, "what is encrypted and how far" comes before the number of features. It's like checking the front-door lock before the number of rooms.
How NordPass encrypts
NordPass uses the XChaCha20 algorithm. NordPass describes this as a next-generation encryption algorithm. It also uses a zero-knowledge architecture, meaning even the company can't see your passwords.
So only you know the master password. The flip side is that if you forget it, there's no recovery. Write your master password down when you sign up and keep it somewhere safe.
How Proton Pass encrypts
Proton Pass uses AES-256 and Argon2. All stored data is protected with end-to-end encryption (E2EE). Not only passwords but usernames, URLs and notes are encrypted on your device before they go to the server.
Some ordinary password managers store certain information, such as URLs, in plain text. Proton Pass encrypts that range too, which is its point of difference. Even if the server were hacked or a Proton employee looked, only encrypted text would show.
| Security item | NordPass | Proton Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption algorithm | XChaCha20 | AES-256 / Argon2 |
| Structure | Zero-knowledge architecture | End-to-end encryption (passwords, usernames, URLs, notes) |
| Operator access | Even the company can't see your passwords | Employees can't see vault contents |
| Headquarters | Panama | Switzerland (Geneva) |
| Open code | Check the official site | 100% open source |
| Independent security audit | Carried out | Carried out regularly and published |
Both services promote a design where the server can't read your data. The differences are headquarters location, whether the code is open, and how actively audit results are published.
Feature comparison: start with what you use every day
If the security structure is about equally solid, next come the everyday conveniences. We'll go through autofill, 2FA, sharing and breach monitoring.
Autofill and auto-save
NordPass recognises usernames and passwords when you open a website and lets you sign in with one click. It also fills forms such as name, address, phone number and credit card. On iOS and Android you get biometric sign-in and a keyboard extension.
Proton Pass got a big autofill upgrade in a 2026 update. According to the official announcement, 80% of the autofill bugs and errors users had reported were fixed. Input fields built as iframes, such as shop checkout modules and bank sign-ins, are now detected. We covered the details in our Proton Pass autofill update.
2FA authentication codes
Proton Pass generates 6-digit 2FA codes inside the saved item, with no separate authenticator app. The latest update also added an option to copy the 2FA code to the clipboard automatically when you sign in. If the autofill pop-up doesn't appear, you just paste on the next screen.
NordPass can also store 2FA codes. Automatic 2FA code generation, though, is on paid plans. If you want to solve 2FA in the same app for free, Proton Pass has the edge.
Email aliases
This is the biggest difference between the two. Proton Pass includes a Hide-my-email feature, which creates an alias address to use at sign-up instead of your real email. Even if a site leaks data, your real email stays hidden, and if spam arrives you simply throw the alias away.
NordPass doesn't provide email masking. If you're sick of spam, this one item is reason enough to pick Proton Pass.
Dark web breach monitoring
NordPass offers dark web monitoring (Data Breach Scanner). It checks whether your email was part of a breach, tells you what information leaked, and tells you what to do right away. Its security check points out weak, reused, old and leaked passwords.
Proton Pass has Pass Monitor. It scans the dark web and leaked databases and sends an alert if risk is detected on a saved account. The names differ, but the job is the same.
Sharing and emergency access
NordPass shares subscription or family accounts through an encrypted channel. You can give read-only or editable permission, and you can cancel sharing at any time. With Emergency Access, you can give a trusted person access after a waiting period.
Proton Pass shares by vault. You make a family vault or a team vault and invite members with read-only or edit permission. When one person changes a password, it syncs to everyone's app. A feature equivalent to emergency access isn't confirmed in our coverage, so check the official site.
| Feature | NordPass | Proton Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Autofill | Supported (biometrics, keyboard extension) | Better iframe form detection (80% of complaints fixed) |
| 2FA codes | Paid plans | Included, with a clipboard auto-copy option |
| Email aliases | Not offered | Included (Hide-my-email) |
| Breach monitoring | Dark web monitoring (Data Breach Scanner) | Pass Monitor |
| Password sharing | Read-only or editable permission | By vault, read-only or edit permission |
| Emergency access | Offered (with a waiting time) | Check the official site |
| Business rollout | Supported | MSIX officially supported (Intune compatible) |

Free plan comparison: the fork in the road for beginners
For a first-time user, the free plan is the most realistic yardstick. You can try it for a few weeks before you spend anything.
The NordPass free plan gives you password storage, a password generator, and auto-save and autofill. But it limits you to one device signed in at a time. That's fine if you only use a phone. If you use a PC and a phone together, syncing doesn't work and it gets awkward. Dark web monitoring and emergency access aren't in the free plan either.
The Proton Pass free plan has no device limit. You can start with the same vault synced across a PC, phone and tablet. So if you want to try it free on several devices, Proton Pass is much easier.
| Free plan item | NordPass Free | Proton Pass Free |
|---|---|---|
| Devices | 1 | No limit |
| Password storage | Unlimited | Check the official site |
| Password generator | Included | Random password generator included |
| Dark web monitoring | None | Check the official site |
| Emergency access | None | Check the official site |
If you'd like to test both, do this. Start with Proton Pass and see how it feels across devices, then try NordPass free to compare the screens and autofill. Neither costs much to sign up for, so a week with both will give you the answer.
Pricing and plans
Prices change often, so this guide only gives values we have a basis for. Check the official page again just before you pay.
NordPass plans
NordPass comes in four plans: Free, Premium, Family and Business. Premium includes unlimited device sync, dark web monitoring, unlimited password sharing and emergency access. Family lets up to 6 people each use the Premium features with an independent account. Business is priced by headcount and comes with a central admin console.
For teams, see our guide to choosing a team password manager.
The NordPass Black Friday terms are 53% off the personal two-year plan with 3 extra months, from 2.49 a month, according to the NordVPN partner team notice we summarised.
Proton Pass plans
Proton Pass has a free plan with no device limit as its base. On the paid side there's Pass Plus, and this Black Friday the Pass Plus 12-month plan is 60% off. What Pass Plus includes and what it costs aren't confirmed in our coverage. Check the official site.
| Plan item | NordPass | Proton Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Yes (1 device) | Yes (no device limit) |
| Personal paid plan | Premium (two-year plan from $1.39 a month, Black Friday terms) | Pass Plus (12-month plan 60% off) |
| Family plan | Family, up to 6 (two-year plan from $2.49 a month, Black Friday terms) | Check the official site |
| Business | Business (priced by headcount) | MSIX rollout supported |
| List price | Check the official site | Check the official site |
The NordPass and Proton Pass deals right now
Both services are in a Black Friday promotion period. Below are the terms as stated in the partner manager's official email.
| Service | Promotion | Terms | Ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordPass | Black Friday | Personal two-year plan 53% off plus 3 extra months, from $1.39 a month | 2026-12-09 |
| Proton Pass | Black Friday | Pass Plus 12-month plan 60% off | 2026-11-30 |
The end dates differ. Proton Pass ends first, on 30 November, rather than 9 December, so look at the date first if you're leaning Proton Pass. All partner deals are on our deals page, and each one has its own page: NordPass deal and Proton Pass deal.
One caution. The bigger percentage isn't automatically cheaper. NordPass is a two-year commitment and Proton Pass is a 12-month plan, so the terms are different lengths. With different commitment periods, percentages alone are hard to compare. Go by the final amount on the checkout screen.
Choose NordPass if you're one of these people
Here are some situations, one at a time.
1. You're new to password managers and want a clear screen
NordPass offers a Korean landing page. Sign-up, app install and password import as simple, with a clear screen. It supports importing from Chrome, 1Password, LastPass, Dashlane and CSV files.
2. You need dark web monitoring and emergency access
If you want to know right away whether your email was in a breach, NordPass's dark web monitoring helps. There's also emergency access, which lets you leave access with family in case of an accident or hospital stay. These features come with Premium and above.
3. You use NordVPN or plan to
NordPass and NordVPN are both Nord Security products, managed under one account. At Black Friday, promotions for both open at the same time. If you're weighing a VPN too, read the NordVPN and NordPass Black Friday plan guide.
4. Six family members will share it
Family lets up to 6 people each use an independent account while sharing safely. It suits a household that wants to stop swapping passwords over a chat app.

Choose Proton Pass if you're one of these people
1. You want to use several devices for free
The free plan with no device limit is the main strength. You can sync a PC and a phone without paying.
2. You're tired of spam
If you make an alias email each time you sign up, your real address doesn't spread. When spam grows, you just switch off that alias. NordPass doesn't have this feature, so many people will decide on this alone.
3. You value open source and public audits
Proton Pass's source code is public, and it publishes audit results from outside organisations. You may not read the code yourself, but a structure that can be checked is reassuring.
4. You already use a Proton account
If you have Proton Mail or Proton VPN, you can start right away with that account. In a business setting, central rollout through Intune is possible with a Windows MSIX package.

Switching and importing: is moving hard?
"What if I try one and don't like it?" That worry makes plenty of people put off the decision. Fortunately both services support importing, so the burden isn't large.
NordPass imports from browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, from 1Password, LastPass and Dashlane, and from CSV files. Proton Pass uses a built-in tool to import data exported from other popular managers and from Chrome's store.
The order for moving is:
- Export your passwords from where you use them now.
- Load them with the new service's import tool.
- Check that autofill works on a few sites you use often.
- Delete the exported file straight away and empty the bin.
- Turn off your browser's built-in password saving so the same account doesn't live in two places.
Step four matters because an exported file is usually unencrypted. You wouldn't leave a key in the door of a house you've moved out of.
Security audits and trust: what to check
Security audits sound like an expert topic, but they're a yardstick for ordinary users too. It's like a restaurant hygiene result pinned by the door.
Proton Pass passed an independent security audit in 2026. The audit covered the app client structure, the server communication stage and the newly added password sharing feature. You can read it in our Proton Pass security audit analysis.
NordPass is listed as having carried out a security audit. The name of the auditor, the timing and how much of the result is public aren't confirmed in what we've published. Check the official site for that.
When you read an audit result, look at three things:
- Who audited? See whether it's an outside body with no interest in the company.
- What was audited? Check whether it was part of the app or covered server communication too.
- How were the findings handled? See whether it says they were fixed.
If you're curious how passwords really leak, read our analysis of five causes of password leaks. Whichever manager you use, a different password on every site is the biggest defence.
Real scenes: how they compare in use
A feature table doesn't give you the feel. Here are scenes you meet during a normal day.
Scene 1: signing up on a new shop
In Proton Pass, you create an alias in the email field, make the password with the generator and save it at once. If that shop leaks your data, your real email stays safe. In NordPass, you build a password with the generator, choosing a length from 8 to 60 characters, and it saves automatically. There's no email alias, so you use your real address.
Scene 2: signing in to a hotel site on a trip
With both services, you open the phone app with biometrics, search and sign in. NordPass supports fingerprint and face recognition, and Proton Pass can use Face ID and fingerprint too. With several devices, NordPass needs Premium for syncing, while Proton Pass syncs even on the free plan.
Scene 3: you've seen news of a big leak
In NordPass, you check with dark web monitoring whether your email is included, then use the security check to find sites where you used the same password. In Proton Pass, you read the Pass Monitor alert and change that site's password first. Either way, if you used a different password per site, the damage stops at one place.
Scene 4: sharing accounts with family
NordPass sets a read-only or editable permission and lets you cancel at any time. Proton Pass lets you make a family-only vault and invite members. Either is far safer than sending a password by chat.
Final comparison: choose by your situation
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I'm new to password managers | NordPass or Proton Pass free | You can try both for free first |
| I want several devices for free | Proton Pass | The free plan has no device limit |
| I get too much spam | Proton Pass | Email aliases are included |
| I need dark web monitoring | NordPass | It provides Data Breach Scanner |
| I want emergency access | NordPass | It gives access after a waiting time you set |
| Open source matters to me | Proton Pass | The source code is 100% public |
| I also use NordVPN | NordPass | Managed under the same Nord account |
| I already use Proton Mail | Proton Pass | You start with the same Proton account |
| Six family members will share | NordPass Family | Up to 6, independent accounts |
Here's our honest opinion. If you haven't spent anything yet, starting with Proton Pass free is the lower-pressure move. If you later need dark web monitoring or emergency access, you can move to NordPass during a sale and lose nothing. If you'd rather cover the whole family at once from the start, NordPass Family is tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which gives more on a free plan, NordPass or Proton Pass?
Proton Pass. Its free plan has no device limit, so you can use a PC and phone together. The NordPass free plan is limited to one device signed in at a time.
Does NordPass have email aliases too?
In our comparison NordPass doesn't offer email masking. Proton Pass includes Hide-my-email as standard. Features can change, so check the official site before you pay.
When do the current deals end?
NordPass Black Friday runs to 2026-12-09 and Proton Pass Black Friday to 2026-11-30. You can check the terms on the NordPass deal page and the Proton Pass deal page.
Can I recover a forgotten master password?
It's hard. Both services don't keep your master password or decryption key on the server, so the company can't open it for you. Proton Pass tells you to print the recovery key you get at sign-up and keep it somewhere safe.
Which is better for a family?
NordPass Family is a plan for up to 6 people, each with their own independent account. Proton Pass shares by vault. For Proton Pass family pricing, check the official site.
Can I move my existing passwords across?
Yes, both support importing. NordPass imports from browsers, 1Password, LastPass, Dashlane and CSV. Proton Pass imports from other managers and Chrome. Be sure to delete the exported file afterwards.
Final thoughts: decide one thing today
To sum up. NordPass is strong on a clear screen, dark web monitoring, emergency access and a family plan. Proton Pass is strong on free unlimited devices, email aliases, open source and public audits.
If you're still torn, decide just one thing today. If you want to use several devices for free, Proton Pass. If you want breach monitoring and emergency access too, NordPass.
